Chartres is a beautiful French city located in the Eure-et-Loir department of the French Centre region. The city is about 90km from Paris and is known as the “Capital of Light and Perfume”. It has about 39,000 inhabitants known as “Chartrains”. The city is surrounded by gorgeous, sprawling wheat fields and is at the foot of the rocky hills that are bypassed by the Eure River.
Chartres dates all the way back to prehistory, as is evident with the number of Megalithic monuments that remain scattered throughout the city, as well as the presence of farming objects dating from the Neolithic period. Evangelized in the middle of the 3rd century by Saint Altin and Saint Eodald, Autricum-Chartres was, at the fall of the Roman Empire, one of the largest bishoprics in all of Gaule. Between the 3rd and 10th centuries, the city appears to have been replaced by a group of small autonomous towns. With the arrival of Thibaud le Tricheur (the count of Blois) in the city’s castle, Chartres once again regained some power. The following period was one of prosperity, religious prosperity in particular. Today Chartres houses various world-renowned companies, most notably the Guerlain perfume workshops.
