Belfort is a quaint city in Eastern France, located in the Franche-Comté region. A river known as the Savoureuse runs through the city, which is but 25 km (15 mi) from Switzerland and 40 km (25 mi) from Germany. The 3-star Campanile Belfort Bessoncourt hotel is known for its homey-style and is perfectly located between the cities of Mulhouse, Basel and Besançon .
Belfort was originally built as a way to control passages on the Rhone and Rhine rivers. It became French in 1648, and the city’s fortified hubs went under siege three times throughout its history. One of the most significant sieges was in 1870-71, lasting 103 days and during which a French colonel and his men were able to withstand the Prussian army. While much of the part of France north of city was taken over by Germany in the first part of the 20th century, Belfort has always remained in French territory. Today the city is known for its tourism, history, industrialization and even its university students. It’s greater population is about 90,000 people.
