Cambrai is situated in the Nord department in northern France. It is known as the ‘city of art and history’ and now represents a city of architecture and beauty, with many monuments of interest to visit. The town suffered heavily during the First World War and unsurprisingly this did little for the aesthetic of the town, but after many reconstruction projects it is now a place worth visiting and regularly satisfies many visitors.
Following the inevitable bombings in the First World War, the reconstruction meant the area was transformed into a city of ‘deco art’. The town upheld traditional activities in such industries as farm and textile and Cambrai remained in the shadows of the region’s industrialisation. In spite of the town’s turbulent history, Cambrai still remains an enchanting commune in northern France and one that has overcome much adversity to stand as it does today.
