La Rochelle is located in the Charente-Maritime Department, in the Poitou-Charentes region on the west coast of France. The city lies on the Atlantic Ocean, right on the “Pertius d’Antioche”, a strait located between the two islands known as Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oléron. La Rochelle dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, when its charter was written in 961 by Guillaume d’Aquitaine. Since then, it has withstood many battles and wars and has undergone many transformations to become the beautiful city that it is today.
