Toulon, the fourth-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast, is located in southern France and is also the capital of the Var department. The port of Toulon is the key naval centre on the Mediterranean coast and is considered essential to industries such as naval construction, wine-making as well as the production of maps, tobacco, shoes and electronic goods.
When in Toulon you will notice the strong wind which is present in the south-east of the country, but a hill protects the town centre from this mistral. In November 1942, during World War II, the town was invaded and, almost exactly a year later, much of the port was destroyed when it was bombed by the Allies. Today it is a charming city with much to offer the many visitors that flock here.
