A fortified city, Gorinchem is located in western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The city, also known as Gorkum, is an easy commute from Rotterdam [link to the relevat page], with the Campanile Gorinchem Hotel [link to relevant hotel page] only 45km from Rotterdam airport. Waterways surround the city with passenger ferries and water taxis providing easy links to nearby cities of Woudrichem and Sleuuwijk, which form part of what is known as the Fortified Triangle.
It is likely that Gorinchem was founded by fisherman and farmers on the land near the mouth of the river Linge around the year 1000. During the 16th century, the old city walls were replaced with new fortifications and bastions, many of which can still be seen today. Although the city walls originally had four gates, only the Dalem Gate, in the east, remains, with a portion of the Water Gate also found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
