The city of Venlo is in the province of Limburg in South-eastern Netherlands. It shares a border with Germany and is close to Dusseldorf , only a short drive from the Campanile Venlo Hotel [link to relevant hotel page]. In 2003, Venlo was awarded the title of ‘Europe’s greenest city’, and this year it will host the Floriade, an international exhibition of flowers and gardening, held every ten years. The site will later be redeveloped into a green business park.Venlo was an important trading post, and in the 14th century became part of the Hanseatic League, a confederation of market towns that dominated trade along the coast of Northern Europe. Many of the city’s buildings were badly damaged during World War II, as a consequence of attacks to the bridges over the river Meuse, which runs through the city. Other towns and villages including Arcen and Blerick also belong to the territory of Venlo.
