Located between Newcastle to the north,Sunderland to the east and Durham to the south, Washington is a small town in the north of England. Although Sunderland doesn’t attract much outside attention, Newcastle and Durham are two popular cities, each defined by differing histories and spectacular architecture. Washington, on the banks of the River Wear, and a short distance from the M1 motorway, is the perfect place from which to explore both of these cities.
Often neglected by tourists, the north of England can throw up all sorts of surprises, and Durham is certainly one of them. A small student city, it is home to a large, in-use castle and a spectacular Norman cathedral. To the north,Newcastle is a cosmopolitan city with a deeply-rooted history. Here, you can explore its castle and old churches or, alternatively, go shopping in one of England’s most renowned retail areas.
